Rhonda falls, Anika gives birth: 'Empire' Season 3, episode 1 recap

Here's everything you need to know about the season 3 premiere of "Empire."

Rhonda Lyon died.

Season 2 of "Empire" ended with Anika and Rhonda tussling on the balcony of a high building. Seconds after season 3 began, we saw Rhonda crash into a car on her fall from the balcony.

The shock of the fight caused Anika to go into labor early, and she delivered Bella, a baby girl. Lucious signed the birth certificate, although his son Hakeem is the actual father.

Andre and Jamal had breakdowns.

Andre did not take his wife’s death well. He hallucinated and saw visions of Rhonda talking to him, saying that he should have believed her when she was alive.

While Jamal was preparing to perform his new song, “Need Freedom,” he had a panic attack. He seemingly flashed back to when Freda Gatz shot him on the red carpet in season 2. He went backstage and was comforted by his mother, Cookie, and brother, Hakeem.

Nessa, played by guest star Sierra McClain, filled in for Jamal on stage during his panic attack. The crowd loved her, but Empire star Tiana seemed jealous.

Lucious’ mansion got bugged.

Lucious invited his half-brother and federal agent Tariq into his home for a family dinner. Tariq brought up dark parts of each family member’s past, hoping to inspire them to turn on Lucious. Cookie told him off, and he left. Little does the family know, Tariq left a camera in a teddy bear of the new baby’s nursery.
