The first fire ants were probably brought here accidentally on ships from Brazil or Argentina, but they've certainly made themselves at home since then. They're easily recognized by their agressiveness, something not found in other ant species. Poking a stick into a fire ant mound will produce an eruption of hundreds of angry, stinging creatures. Needless to say, stepping into a mound produces a similar, but more painful result. You can kill all the fire ants you see, but unless the queen is killed the mound will survive. A professional pest control company is best equipped to assess your fire ant problem and suggest the ideal way to solve it. Modern pest management methods have been developed to kill the queen and the colony in a safe, ecologically sound manner.
