Water is essential to our health: the human body cannot survive without it for more than a few days. On the other hand, contaminated water poses its own health hazards. A great number of annoying or even harmful substances can find their way into our water supply. These include minerals like iron, copper, and lead, as well as organic materials, chemicals, bacteria, viruses and infectious organisms called 'cysts.' A water softener removes many, but not all, mineral deposits. Dangerous bacteria and other organisms can usually be treated through filtration and disinfection. However, water filters and softeners need to be sanitized or replaced on a regular basis, or else they'll encourage build-up of the very contaminants they're meant to remove. While the United States as a whole probably has one of the best water qualities, the water supply can vary greatly from one city to the next. Even in the best system, microscopic organisms could remain. Filtration systems are a good way to ensure excellent water quality in your home. For more information on water and your health, visit the internet, your local library, or a water conditioning dealer.
