Twitter hails 'Boy Erased' after first trailer drops showing gay conversion therapy

The first trailer for the highly-anticipated drama “Boy Erased” dropped Tuesday and it did not disappoint.

Many fans applauded a glimpse of the coming-of-age drama and are getting the tissues ready for the film's Nov. 2 release.

The film, based on a Garrard Conley's memoir of the same name, tells the story of a Baptist pastor’s son Jared (Lucas Hedges) being outed to his parents in a small town.

To avoid being shunned by his family, friends and church, Jared's parents (Russell Crowe and Nicole Kidman) force him to attend a conversion therapy program.

Hedges was nominated for an Oscar for his role in 2016’s “Manchester by the Sea,”

The highly controversial gay conversion therapy treats sexual orientation or gender identity as a mental illness that can be changed through tactics, ranging from hypnosis to inducing shame.

Despite dozens of medical associations and child-welfare institutions discrediting the practice, at least 20,000 LGBTQ people will undergo conversion therapy from a licensed health care professional before the age of 18, according to a 2018 study by the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law.

Twitter users called the trailer powerful, predicting awards-worthy praise for the film.

The trailer featured a song by Troye Sivan, who appears in the film as a teenager in the conversion therapy camp.

Joel Edgerton wrote, produced and directed the movie. He also has a role in the film.
