JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Police said a 70-year-old Middleburg woman tried to hire someone to kill her daughter-in-law.

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, an undercover detective met with Diana Costarakis at a Home Depot on Crosshill Boulevard on Wednesday.

Costarakis allegedly solicited the detective to kill her daughter-in-law for $5,000. Police said she gave the detective a first payment of $500, a photograph of her daughter-in-law and her address and vehicle description.

Police said Costarakis met with the undercover again Thursday.

She allegedly paid an additional $1,000 and told the detective that her daughter-in-law wore expensive jewelry, and when the job was done, he could take the jewelry off her body.

Costarakis allegedly told the detective that the diamonds could be removed and sold without a trace, and that money could be used toward the final payment.

Costarakis accused her daughter-in-law of being a drunk who was planning to divorce her husband and move her granddaughter to Denver.

Police said when Costarakis was asked if she wanted her daughter-in-law dead, she said, "If you don't, I will."

Action News spoke with the woman targeted in the alleged plot, Angela Costarakis. She said she had no idea about the plot.

'She gave me a big old hug and said, 'I'm glad we're great friends,'" Costarakis said. "I guess if I was out of the way she could have her son and granddaughter to herself."

Police arrested Diana Costarakis. They report she immediately asked for an attorney after being read her Miranda rights.

Diana Costarakis is charged with two first-degree felonies: criminal solicitation and criminal conspiracy.

WOW,ruined her life because she couldn't stand the one who gave birth to her grandchild or she felt helpless because she thought the child was being abused?! I have 4 grandchildren. The last grandson was drunk and drugged the whole nine months while she carried him. Then she drags him around the country like a satchel and exposed him to one abusive boyfriend after another. It took me 3 years for me and his daddy to get custody finally at age 5. If EVER there was a time I could of hated someone, it was then. BUT ALL I DID WAS PRAY, AND GAVE IT UP TO GOD. I had nothing but HOPE that my grandchild will be alright. And I placed my Faith in God and was heard. Now we have him and even the mother has cleaned up her act. But the best part is my grandson will never be hurt or neglected again. Prayer works...revenge is not ours.
