ST. AUGUSTINE Fla. -- As she wiped tears with her shackled hands, Candace Jackson seemed to be in shock over the charges brought against her.
"I'm getting second-degree murder?" she asked at her first appearance Saturday morning. "It was an accident though."
But police tell Action News Jackson deliberately struck her live-in girlfriend, Shaina Armstrong with her car at the Bank of America in St. Augustine. Police say she also hit Armstrong's mother with her vehicle, killing her.
Jackson's next-door neighbor says police have been called to the couple's home several times.
"They get into shoving matches now and then," said neighbor David Johnson.
Jackson told the judge she had been in trouble with the law before.
"I was already on probation so I would have never done that on purpose," she said.
After just one night in jail, and insisting the incident was an accident, Jackson asked the judge if she could be released.
"My girlfriend is in the hospital right now and her mom is dead," she said. "I just want to get out and see them."
Neighbors say Shaina Armstrong is still recovering in the hospital from her injuries.
