MIDDLEBURG, Fla. -- A Clay County woman is in jail, accused of running a cancer con. The sheriff's office says she got people to give her more than $100,000.

The Clay County Sheriff's Office says Mary Ann McCall told others she was dying of cancer and needed their help.  They say she had children raising money, and business people handing over thousands of dollars in cash to help.   But something about Mary Ann McCall's stories didn't seem right to one Action News viewer.

She called us and asked Action News to look into Mary Ann McCall's story. Her call kicked off a months-long investigation with twists and turns fit for a Hollywood movie.

Action News tracked down more than a dozen of Mary Ann McCall's alleged victims in Georgia and Florida, but only five would agree to speak with us. A few were too embarrassed to show their faces.

They say McCall willingly took anything they would give.

"It's humiliating for all of us," said one woman we spoke with. "We're smarter than that."

"She did confess to the alleged crimes in this case."

"She opened her door and said, 'look at all this stuff people have given me,'" said another person.

McCall allegedly conned friends and Good Samaritans out of thousands.

Lt. Dan Mahla with the Clay County Sheriff's Office says she even ran her scam at her son's schools.

"One of the local high schools here in Clay County, she did approach them and started the same scheme that she had done at a middle school here in Clay County in the past."

They say teachers opened their checkbooks and convinced others to do the same. In an e-mail obtained by Action News, the principal of one of those schools thanked Good Samaritans for coming forward with cash for McCall.

"People really want to pour their hearts out and they want to give to those less fortunate."

By the time that email was sent in late 2011, some people were having their doubts. McCall had claimed to be dying for more than a year. But, many wanted to know why she still looked so healthy?

People had questions for Mary Ann McCall and so did Clay County detectives. They investigated her for months. On Friday, they brought her in for questioning.  That's when, deputies said,  Mary Ann McCall did the most surprising thing of all.

"She did confess to the alleged crimes in this case."

Sources in the Clay County Sheriff's Office say Mary Ann took nearly $100,000 from people. Investigators expect to uncover even more victims and more money in the coming weeks.

Mary Ann McCall is facing charges of felony grand theft and felony fraud. She's currently being held on $250,000 bond.

A true sociopath - the only remorse she feels is getting caught. Was her family in on it?

How can any one do such a thing? Evidently she has never seen a person or a child suffer in pain for years before succumbing to such a horrible disease, as my sweet 11 year niece did. Maybe a judge could make that part of her punishment to visit these patients that are going through the pain of cancer, though I doubt that it would effect this con artist.
