YULEE, Fla. -- First she was reportedly involved in a fight during an event held at the Ritz Carlton. Then, the Nassau County Commissioner was arrested for drunk driving. But Monday night, Stacy Johnson continued representing her county constituents.
Action News was the only station on hand when Johnson's leadership role on the board was handed over to someone else.
It was business as usual inside the Nassau County commission meeting. Commissioner Stacy Johnson manned her post, weeks after police dash cam video caught her bashing the position and the district she represents.
"I'm not afraid. I hate this job. I hate this county. I hate it," she was heard saying in the video.
That fateful June night, Johnson was handcuffed and arrested in her driveway for DUI.
Flash forward to Monday, as Johnson professionally addresses the agenda items before her. She now does sit on this panel in a different role. She has decided to resign from her leadership position of Chairman of the Board of Commissioners.
"I don't wanna be on there," she said to Action News as our crews approached her after the meeting.
When we tried to ask her why she stepped down from the role, she walked away from us.
"County business, no," is all Johnson would say.
Commissioner Danny Leeper is now the Chairman of the board. He tells Action News Johnson stepping down was the right call.
"I think she did the right thing by volunteering to step down. It takes away the distractions that it was causing and let's the board now focus on what we need to study and take care of for the people of Nassau County," he said.
We also asked him if he thinks it is right for Johnson to stay on as a commissioner.
"That's being handled through the judicial system," Leeper said.
He also told Action News she has been a very effective commissioner.
Johnson did have a court appearance scheduled for Monday morning. That has been pushed back to next Monday.
