Bids sent to contractors to fix Mathews Bridge
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Florida Department of Transportation has sent out bids to contractors to fix the Mathews Bridge.
A ship slammed into the bridge last Thursday, shutting it down indefinitely.
The closure forced drivers to the other big bridges downtown, such as the Hart, Main Street and Acosta.
FDOT said the damage is worse than originally thought. In addition to a big dent in the beam, there is a section of the road on the bridge that was pulled apart from the ship's impact.
Repairs are estimated to cost about $3 million and take a couple weeks.
The Coast Guard is investigating the cause of the crash.
FDOT will give an update on the progress to fix the bridge at a news conference Tuesday at 2 p.m. Action News will be there.
