CLAY COUNTY, Fla. -- The street leading to Jim Reed's home has turned into a river. Flood water from the nearby Black Creek has spilled over into the neighborhood. It's only getting worse as Tropical Depression Debby continues to dump rain on Northeast Florida.
"We've got two-and-a-half feet before it floods into the house. But the house is already ten-and-a-half feet in the air on stilts," says Reed.
By Tuesday afternoon, the Black Creek had reached 23 feet, which is about seven feet above flood stage. The Clay County Sheriff's Office says "We haven't seen the worst of it." The creek will crest on Wednesday.
Several people living along the creek have already been forced to leave their homes. A voluntary evacuation is in place for the area. The American Red Cross has set up a shelter in the cafeteria at Middleburg High School. As of Tuesday night, about a dozen people were in the shelter.
Jim Reed says dealing with the Black Creek flooding his neighborhood is the trade-off for living there.
"When you live out here, you're kind of used to it," says Reed. "But it's one of the slices of Heaven that I don't think people know about."
