Clark Howard: Trading phones
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- If you have a cellphone that you don't love as much as you did before, and you're tempted to get a new one, well the good news is that not as many people are tiring of their cellphones anymore.
That means cellphone manufacturers are trying to scare up buyers who will go back to getting rid of their phones every nine to 12 months. Today, people are happy having their phone for a couple of years or longer.
So now a number of players are offering new enhanced trade-in programs where you can sell out of your old phone. Get decent money depending on the phone. What's decent money? As much as $300 for the latest greatest cellphones? As much as $50 for one nobody really wants.
But the whole point is that it buys your way out of an early termination charge if you're in a contract or to defray the cost of the phone you're going to buy.
