JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Tuition could be on the rise for local college students. The state's Board of Governors will meet on the UNF campus Thursday afternoon to decide how much that hike could cost.
Earlier this year state lawmakers cut $300 million from the state university system, and left it up to school presidents to determine how much of an increase they need. UNF is one of 10 state school's that have requested a 15 percent increase, the maximum allowed by law.
UNF President John Delaney tells Action News the funds are necessary to keep things going.
"We've got to put a product out there, and the question is are you going to be able to admit students or cut classes? It's really that simple."
Governor Rick Scott spoke out against the hike earlier in the week.
"Tuition is a cost that's gone up dramatically in recent years. I know we are below the national average but I think we need to look at every dollar and make sure we are not wasting dollars.
The University of Florida is the only public university asking for less than 15 percent. School officials there want a nine-percent increase.
