JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A teenage boy is recovering after being shot twice while riding his bike. Neighbors said they heard the gunshots. Police say two of them hit James Thomas, 13.
A fire station on one corner, a church on another. And just steps away, in broad daylight, Thomas was shot while riding his bike along West 15th Street and Fairfax Avenue Sunday.
"It's very sad. Anytime somebody gets shot or robbed or violated, it's bad," said Michael Adams.
Police said the teen heard five shots when he was hit. It happened right in front of Adams' mom's house. He said being surrounded by safe places isn't enough.
"See what happened yesterday. Thirteen years old so, fire department and church was here yesterday and see what happened," said Adams.
Right now, police are working to piece the crime together. Just hours before, and right around the corner, a man was shot. Police are trying to figure out if the shootings are related. As far as suspects, they don't have much to go on.
Neighbors said it is because officers didn't get there fast enough.
"By the time the officers get here, everything's over with," Adams said.
Anyone with information on either shooting is urged to call Crimestoppers at 866-845-TIPS.
