Concerns over a new JTB traffic light

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.--  It's one of the most congested intersections in Jacksonville, where Butler Boulevard meets I-95.

In the past few years the backup has gotten so bad the FDOT decided to redesign it altogether to the tune of $78 million. In February, DOT released plans for a new flyover.

But drivers are sending mixed signals about a new traffic light proposed as part of the project.

"Don't put the light there," said local driver Ericka Slaughter.

The DOT plans to install a new light on the exit ramp from I-95 north to allow drivers to turn left onto Butler Boulevard West. Right now, drivers need to go out of their way and take JTB East just to go west.

Many local drivers say a new light to get to JTB West would be helpful.

"Right now it doesn't make sense that you have to go down Butler to go under Butler to come back," said driver Pat Forcier.

Others say a light would defeat the purpose of a new interchange design, only causing more congestion.

"I think it will make traffic a little bit worse than it already is," said Slaughter.

The DOT says they are accepting public comment and are open to making changes.

Construction isn't slated to begin until 2015.

the intersection needs 4 ramps w/out lights to east/west jtb.. sbound flyover will ease backups on I95 IN THE PM... BUT LOSE THE LIGHTS ASAP...

A traffic light at that location would just create a bigger traffic problem.

When I used the current intersection for north bound I-95 exiting traffic onto the ramp heading east and then u-turning under butler to go back west... I thought, what a great idea to keep traffic moving in all directions and not have to sit at a light. Butler east of I-95 should never have traffic lights on it. I consider this road a interstate highway. Please NO LIGHT.
