FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. -- Storm survey teams with the National Weather Service have confirmed a tornado hit Fernandina Beach.  Those crews will move on to survey the damage at Mayport.

Folks in Fernandina Beach have a busy weekend ahead of them, cleaning up the damage caused by the tornado.

There is debris piled up between two houses on A1A. It appears to be mostly siding and shingles, ripped off by the tornado spawned by Tropical Storm Andrea.

The hammers came out early Friday morning.

"It happened really quick," said Ginger Grillo, a local homeowner. "I mean, it sorta made you scream and then it was gone."

Ginger Grillo's home was hit.

"Everything on the back of the lanai just started swirling," Grillo said. "It sounded real loud and screechy."

Norm Barnes described a similar scene, saying it added a little unexpected drama to his Florida vacation.

"I had the window open looking out going, 'Yeah I think it's coming'," said Norm Barnes, a tourist. "I shut the window and about that time, for about 15 seconds it reached 50-60 mph winds."

In a matter of seconds, fences were torn down and huge oak trees on Jasmine Street were uprooted. The possible tornado caused some chaos, but didn't cause any serious damage. Homeowners and tourists alike are thankful .

"We are so blessed and so lucky," said Grillo. "I just can't imagine how the people in Oklahoma, ours is nothing compared to that. "

The good news is no one here was hurt.
