YULEE, Fla. -- Nassau County Commissioner, Stacy Johnson, has found herself at the center of yet another scandal. The 38-year-old mother of three was arrested Friday night on DUI charges.
This happened, just months after she was allegedly involved in a fist fight with another woman at the Ritz-Carlton. Sheriff Tommy Seagraves said Johnson asked him to cover up that fight. He didn't. And ever since, Johnson's attorney says his client feels like she has a target on her back.
Action News asked Attorney Gary Baker, "She kind of feels like Sheriff Seagraves is out to get her. Can you talk to me about that?" He replied, "That's her belief."
You can even hear her talk about a possible conspiracy during her arrest. It was recorded by a police dash cam. Johnson says, "Do you know that I get pulled over like every other night? Do you know that?" She goes on to say, "I get pulled over because they want something on me."
A Nassau County deputy then says to her, "So, you're saying you're being framed?" Johnson replied, "Yes, I think I've been kind of set up."
Baker says there's something fishy about Johnson's arrest. First, he says she drove miles with a police tail, yet there's no video of her driving erratically.
"Why do we have no video?," Baker said, "Nothing. Why was she not pulled over, over that period of time? If she's a danger to citizens, isn't it irresponsible for the police officer not to pull her over, and continue to let her drive all the way to her driveway?"
In a 911 call obtained by Action News, the caller describes a blue Toyota SUV swerving all over the road. Unable to see the driver of the SUV, the caller refers to her as "him."
The caller said, "He's been weaving in and out of traffic. And he almost hit a car going head on. I think he might be drunk."
Then there's the field sobriety test. She never took one. At first, deputies said she refused the test. Later, we hear her ask for one. Johnson said, "I'm telling you right now I'll take a sobriety test. I don't care. I don't want to go to jail. I have three kids. I'll take a sobriety test right now."
Action News asked Baker, "Is it too late once you refuse the first time?" He answered, "No. That's all at the discretion of the officer. And that's another big red flag."
Another red flag, Baker says, is that there were four deputies at Johnson's house during her arrest. He says that's too many. And he says he has an inside source who tells him deputies have been told to keep a close eye on Johnson.
Now, it's up to him to prove it. "No matter what, she was going to be arrested for DUI," he said.
Action News tried contacting Sheriff Seagraves for his side of the story. He was not available for comment. We also called the other county commissioners. No comments there either.
Johnson's attorney says one thing is for sure. His client won't be resigning her position. He says that would look like an admission of guilt.
