JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Police say a man entered the Holiday Grocery on Shindler Drive on the Westside and demanded money -- only to be shot by the shop's owner.

Action News spoke with the business owner Monday afternoon. He said he has owned the gas station and store since 2000 and this isn't the first armed robber he's encountered. He didn't want to share any more details on camera because the investigation continues.

It's a corner store with a constant flow of customers. Inside, Action News counted at least nine surveillance cameras keeping silent watch. But that wasn't enough to stop an armed robber -- who police say jumped this counter and demanded cash.

"I got grandkids right here around the corner. They're shooting right here on the streets. It's stupid," said customer David Painter.

Painter said he's been shopping at Holiday Grocery every day for years. Police said this shop's owner pulled a gun of his own, shooting the robber in the chest. Painter said the owner has every reason to protect what's his.

"Were all trying to make it, and for somebody just to come in and take it from us, after we work as hard as we do, as long as we have to have what we got, I'm not letting nobody take mine. I'd shoot 'em in a heartbeat," he said.

Seven weekend robberies occurred around town over the weekend. Police aren't sure if they're all related. Painter said it's the reason he got his concealed-weapons permit.

"And you need to tote your pistol with you at all times because they're not scared and they will come up and they're not scared to hurt your family or anybody with you," Painter said.

The suspect was taken to UF Health Jacksonville with non-life-threatening injuries, according to JSO.

The store was open business as usual Monday. Police continue trying to put the pieces of all the recent robberies together.

If you have any details on any of the recent robberies, you are urged to call police.
