GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. -- The owner of a local business now open in Green Cove Springs says all he wants to do is keep the roadways safe.

Pete Scalzo opened the Green Cove Dragway so drivers wouldn't break the law by racing on the streets.

Tony Gonyon says since 16, he was one of those drivers racing on the highway or dirt roads.

"We used to go out there and street race. I'll admit to it," says Gonyon.

Scalzo says he wanted to attack the illegal street driving problem by opening the Green Cove Dragway.

"The people needed a controlled environment for where they could come and race," said Scalzo.

If drivers are caught racing on Florida roadways, they face a fine between $500 and $3,000. They could also permanently lose their license.

Scalzo says his tracks have proven to be successful in Miami and Kentucky. He says safety and saving lives is the overall goal. Something he feel he's accomplished.

"I get a lot of satisfaction out of knowing that we are responsible for saving lives," said Scalzo.
