LAKE BUTLER, Fla.-- When Elaine Sirmans got the call that her ex-husband had been shot, she says she thought he was dead.
"I was like, No, this isn't possible," she said.
After 22 years of marriage to Lewis Mabrey, Sirmans says they are still close and she feels blessed that he survived being shot by one of his friends at Pritchett Trucking. She says it was quick thinking that saved his life.
"When Mr. Allen shot at him, he said for some reason he raised his arm and got shot in his arm and then dropped down to the ground," she said. "He said he felt like his life was flashing in front of him but he was glad he made it through."
His family said he knew others were hurt and wished there was more he could do to save them.
"He told me he was surprised at the way things happened. He told me he felt bad he couldn't help any of the other people," she said.
Mabrey is expected to be released from the hospital in the next few days. His family said he is making a steady recovery and is in good spirits.
