NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. -- A man was killed Saturday evening near State Road A1A and Interstate 95 after he tried to save his cat from danger, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash report states the unidentified man was hit by a pickup truck driven 25-year-old David Michael Marsh.

Troopers say Marsh tried to stop before hitting the pedestrian but did not avoid the collision.

The Florida Highway Patrol on Tuesday identified the victim as 25-year-old Zackary Jade Landers of Philomath, Oregon.

The victim's cat was uninjured in the incident and is being taken care of by Nassau County Animal Control.
