LAKE CITY, Fla. -- A group of thieves that law enforcement has dubbed the "Felony Lane Gang" managed to steal thousands of dollars from a woman in Lake City.
Lake City police say the trio, which includes a woman and two men, broke into a woman's car in front of the Kountry Kids Daycare in August. They stole her purse which had her checkbook, ATM card, and identification. Police say they got gas at a nearby store and tried to get money from an ATM in Live Oak.
According to the police report, a similar crime happened to a Gainesville woman. Investigators say the trio used the Gainesville victim's check to get $2,600 from the Lake City victim's account. They also used that account to open up a charge account at a Walmart to buy $2,000 in electronics.
A day later, the woman in the trio rented a Chevy Malibu from the Hertz at the Gainesville Airport. The white car with Florida tag F78-45N has not been returned.
Investigators blame this group for several other crimes across the state. They are called the "Felony Lane Gang" because they use the far lane at the bank when they go to cash the fraudulent checks in an attempt to obscure their identities.
