ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- Police are searching for at least two intruders after an attempted robbery at a home on Duval Street Monday ended with one man fighting for his life.
The woman who rents the home tells Action News that approximately 8:30 PM, she and four kids between the ages of 12 and 17 were in the back bedrooms of the home when they heard someone pounding on the front door. They then heard a man yell, "Police! Police!"
Instead, it was intruders, who shot open her front door and continued shooting inside.
She showed our photographers evidence of bullet holes in the walls and furniture.
Her friend, Jamar Hamilton, 32, attempted to protect her family by running from the kitchen into the living room and firing back. Hamilton was struck once in the stomach. The intruders ran away, and witness report seeing them wearing masks and dark clothing, running on foot north toward King Street. It is unclear if they were injured.
Police say the alleged attempted robbery may have been drug related. Action News found Hamilton has a long history with the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office including multiple drug charges.
Hamilton continued to be in and out of surgery Tuesday at UF Health in Jacksonville, unable to speak with police to assist in identifying the intruders.
