JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A Jacksonville Sheriff's Office SWAT team officer fired his weapon at a car full of auto theft suspects at Jacksonville International Airport Wednesday afternoon.

Police say they followed the suspects' car into the airport parking garage. The men were wanted for a carjacking that occurred last week in Northwest Jacksonville.

Police tell Action News that when officers approached the car, the driver tried to run over police officers.

"Their fear of the detectives at the scene was this is a subject that had already attempted to strike two other officers," said JSO Chief Tom Hackney, "The public safety is at risk. That is why the use of deadly force was employed."

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office tells Action News that all three gun shots were fired in the airport's parking garage by a member of the sheriff's SWAT team with his department issued AR-15 rifle.

The suspects fled the airport inside their bullet-riddled white Ford Crown Victoria to a Northside apartment complex six miles away. Police took two men into custody there, one of whom is a 17-year-old with a bullet wound to his ankle. Police say he's the suspect they shot at the airport. Neither of the men arrested was carrying a weapon and police did not find one inside their car.

Police are still trying to locate a third suspect they identify as Rodney Addison, 20, who is still on the run.

Flights at JIA were not affected by the incident.

Late Wednesday afternoon, police said a code red lockdown at Highlands Elementary School was connected to the shooting at the airport and police were seen in the area of Monaco Arms II Apartments.
