JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville Jaguars have reached an agreement with David Caldwell to become the general manager of the team. A veteran of 17 years in the NFL, Caldwell spent the past five seasons with the Atlanta Falcons. Caldwell served the 2012 season as the Falcons director of player personnel.
“We got our man,” Jaguars Owner Shad Khan said. “I have a lot of faith in David Caldwell and I can assure our fans that the best days for the Jacksonville Jaguars are in front of us.”
Caldwell, 38, will be introduced by Khan at a news conference on Thursday at 4 pm at EverBank Field.
“I am thrilled to accept the offer to become the next general manager of the Jacksonville Jaguars,” Caldwell said. “There are no bad GM opportunities in the NFL, but to work on behalf of a dynamic owner in a rabid football city like Jacksonville is truly special. This is where I wanted to be and I could not be happier. I can't wait to get to Jacksonville and get started.
Caldwell's agent tweeted confirmation shortly before 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
"Congrats to client Dave Caldwell on reaching an agreement in principle with Jacksonville to become their next General Manager," tweeted Brian Ayrault.
Caldwell has been the front-runner to get the Jaguars GM job for the better part of a week. He had three interviews with Jaguars owner Shad Khan in the last ten days since former General Manager Gene Smith was fired.
Caldwell and Steve Keim were considered the favorites coming out of the weekend, but on Tuesday Caldwell reportedly met with the New York Jets for the second time. Meanwhile, Keim was named the General Manager for the Arizona Cardinals on Tuesday.
This past season, Caldwell served as the Atlanta Falcons Director of Player Personnel and also spent four years as the Director of College Scouting with the Falcons. Before his time in Atlanta, Caldwell spent 10 years with the Indianapolis Colts and two seasons with the Carolina Panthers.
Caldwell is considered one of the rising stars in the business after his two stints with highly successful organizations and working under two reputable general managers (Bill Polian and Thomas Dimitroff).
Caldwell will be tasked with the job of trying to fix a 2-14 Jaguars team and immediately will have to decide whether to retain head coach Mike Mularkey. The two are familiar with each other because of their days in Atlanta.
