JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A woman suspected of being at the wheel of a crash that killed a 5-year-old girl tried to flag down a Florida Highway Patrol trooper who drove by the scene just minutes after the crash, according to the FHP.
Sgt. Dylan Bryan told Action News Thursday afternoon that the trooper saw the woman carrying the young girl in her arms. The trooper, after realizing what he saw, turned around and returned to the scene to give CPR to the little girl.
Kelsey Johnson, 5, didn't make it.
Bryan said alcohol may be a factor in the crash.
The crash happened on the east beltway of I-295 in the northbound lanes, about two miles north of Philips Highway.
Investigators say 28-year-old Crystle Lynne Heidrick was going north in the emergency lane when it ended.
The FHP said Heidrick turned to the right and over-corrected. Her car went across the northbound lanes and crashed into a large tree.
Bryan told Action News Heidrick is cooperating with crash investigators and submitted to a blood draw.
