ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- A grandmother from St. Augustine is accused of beating a child with a belt.
According to the St. Augustine Police Department, 52-year-old Debra O'sickey is behind bars on suspicion of abusing a 6-year-old child.
A friend of the family, Christopher Morris, tells Action News he was shocked to learn of her arrest.
"She's never been in any kind of trouble. She works, comes home and supports her family," said Morris.
The St. Augustine Police Department said the child was in O'sickey's care.
According to a police report, nurses at Webster Elementary School found 4-inch by 2-inch red and purple bruises up and down the child's back.
Police say the mother of the child noticed the bruising earlier that morning and asked O'sickey but according to investigators the grandmother told her the girl had fallen on a toy.
O'sickey is being held on a $10,000 bond in the St. Johns County jail. She is facing child abuse charges.
Action News has learned O'sickey is 2-year-old Dixie Wallace's grandmother. No charges were ever filed in that case.
