JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. -- A sailor is accused of sexually assaulting a woman in Jacksonville Beach.
Police say the victim was attacked just before 4 a.m. in the 100 block of 1st Avenue North, not far from the Freebird Live café.
A friend of the victim told Action News that the woman went to a concert at Freebird Live last night. On the way home, she was riding a skateboard when the suspect stopped her to ask for directions. When she turned her head, her friend says the man hit her and attacked her. The friend says the victim fought her attacker off for about ten minutes, and a man in a truck stopped to help when he saw what was going on.
Authorities captured the suspect about a block away from the incident. Two witnesses and the victim identified the suspect at the scene.
The woman is in stable condition at UF & Shands Jacksonville.
Edward Andrew Marshall-Byrd Jr., 21, has been charged with Sexual Battery with Great Bodily Injury.
Authorities say he's stationed at Mayport as part of the USS Halyburton
. The E2 Senior Apprentice has been in the Navy for a year.
More charges are pending.
