Local teacher fired after drug arrest
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A teacher arrested during a drug sting is out of a job.
The Duval County School District fired James Van Richburg on Tuesday night. He pleaded guilty to drug charges last month following his arrest in Clay County. Van Richburg taught at James Weldon Johnson Middle.
He was one of seven teachers fired or disciplined during last night's school board meeting.
L'euna Shaban received a seven-day suspension without pay for Step III progressive discipline. The school board said Shaban put the incorrect time on the sign-in log on several occasions. The school board said Shaban even became verbally combative with a secretary at First Coast High School during which she claimed she had the right to be late seven minutes each day.
Jennifer Creason received a five-day suspension without pay for Step III progressive discipline for willful neglect of duty. The board said she accrued five additional days of leave without pay than what's allowed under district policy. She teaches math at Fletcher Middle School.
Stephanie Raver, a teacher at James Weldon Johnson, resigned before her termination hearing.
