BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. (WFTV) -- Officials said a man drowned while fishing in a canal in Brevard County on Saturday.

Deputies said the incident happened around 11 a.m. in a canal just off Sea Ray Drive in Merritt Island. The canal connects the Banana and Indian rivers.

The 53-year-old victim was fishing when he reportedly went too far under an overpass, officials said. Paramedics performed CPR on the man and rushed him to Cape Canaveral Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

The victim was later identified as Nathaniel Gilmore. Deputies said alcohol could have been a factor in Gilmore's death and an autopsy will be performed.
