JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The man accused of infecting patients at a Jacksonville health care facility with Hepatitis C will learn his sentence Monday morning.
Steven Beumel was a Radiology Technician at the Mayo Clinic from 2004 - 2010. But between 2006 and 2008, officials say he replaced syringes filled with Fentanyl with used syringes filled with contaminated saline, which led to numerous infections.
In May 2011, Mayo Clinic CEO Dr. William Rupp spoke about Beumel's actions.
"When things were busy, he would take that syringe, inject himself, change the needle, fill the syringe with saline and put it back...this individual managed to circumvent our processes for control of these narcotics. He stole them from us and from the patients."
It took Mayo scientists working with the Florida Department of Health and the Center for Disease Control three years to trace the infections back to Beumel.
Beumel is charged with tampering with a consumer product causing serious bodily injury and five counts of stealing by deception. He faces a maximum sentence of life in federal prison.
He will be sentenced in federal court Monday morning.
