JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jewish community in Mandarin is hoping for some safety changes to intersections off San Jose Boulevard. Friday, around the start of Yom Kippur, a mother and her daughter were hit by a car trying to cross that road.

Police say the woman, Esther Ohayon, 57, died. Her daughter has life-threatenig injuries and was transported to UF Health. Jacksonville Jewish Center member Marco Rand says on Yom Kippur, synagogue members cannot use electronics or even cars.

"There's to be no work, no driving that includes going to and from synagogue. They were probably walking to Etz Chaim Synagogue," Rand said.

Rand says now, during one of the holiest days of the year, the Jewish community will pray for this woman and her family.
And also that something can be done for those who walk this intersection every week.

Action news spoke to waitresses at a restaurant at that intersection.
They say they aren't surprised this happened because they see people trying to get across it all the time.

billy bob you racist jack!! She not only looked both ways....her cross walk light was green. There is a censor at that intersection that detects pedestrians and automatically "pushes" the button for them. To tell her to go back JEW LAND is an outrage. SHe had the right of way. Let's focus on the real issue here. THe murderer. Michael didn't have enough to run down and kill a 6 year old a few blocks away 4 years earlier, he had to go out and run down and murder this mother as well. Looking both ways has nothing to do with cars running red lights. Or like in the case of the 6 year old girl, his light turned green while they were still in the cross walk and he just didn't give a damn. He RAN THEM OVER anyway. And by give a damn I mean LOOK before you take your foot off the break and put it on the gas. THIS IS NOT about the button being pushed. Don't tilt the story for yourselves. This is about a murderer on the loose. Thankfully he's now been arrested.

Jammers911! If she did look both ways she would not have been a speed bump in the road that day ! She would be here today alive and well enjoying life !

Billy Bob Hill you are an IDIOTIC RACIST BIGOT. This sweet woman had more class and compassion in her baby finger than you could ever aspire to have in a lifetime. How do you know she did not look both ways? She was in the crosswalk and got hit, do you think it is possible that the driver was speeding and not paying attention. Do you think it was possible that he ran the red light? Why don't you wait for all the facts to come out

Who hit them? No one knows if it was a hit and run or if the driver was impared. What does that mean (can not push a cross walk button)? Tradgiety in the name of religion!

can you confirm that the same Michael Fortunato was involved in both deaths just blocks from each other a few years apart? http://jacksonville.com/news/metro/crime/2009-12-25/story/mom_talks_about_painful_afternoon_when_her_little_girl_was_killed_
