JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Bandaged, swollen and shackled, two suspects arrested after Wednesday night's movie theater melee had to face a judge for their first appearance in court Thursday.
"He's scared and he's upset. He's crying. Like I said, he's never been through any of this," said Felicia Taylor, Jaquade Miller's mother.
Taylor says her 18-year-old son has no prior record. She said her son barely goes out and was surprised he was even involved.
"I got several phone calls saying my son had been in an altercation with police and that was unusual for him," she said.
Taylor said she dropped her son off at the River City mall Wednesday night, and not long after, had to rush back there to find him.
"After asking several officers can I go to make sure he's OK to try and find out what's going on, and they told me no I couldn't and if I were to try and proceed I would be arrested," she said.
The judge called on the parents of both suspects to speak on their behalf in court. The judge agreed to release Miller to the custody of his mother. He is banned from the River City Mall and if returns the judge says he'll put him back in jail.
The other suspect, 19-year-old Tevyn Davis, was supposed to ship off to the Army this weekend. The judge says he would only release Davis if military officers were to pick him up. For now, he remains behind bars.
