JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The owners of a home in 12000 block of Kelsey Island Drive were able to escape an early-morning house fire, according firefighters with the Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department.

Detectives tell Action News the fire started around 5 a.m. and was able to spread quickly through the front of the house.

Action News uncovered that the fire hydrant nearest the house was inoperable at the time of the fire.

A JEA  spokesperson confirmed that the hydrant's valve was turned off and that JFRD was responsible for that hydrant's maintenance.

Officials are still investigating the cause of the fire and figuring out why the valve on the hydrant was turned off.
