CLAY COUNTY, Fla. -- A tattered and torn, weathered flag at the corner of Branan Field and Old Jennings Road in Middleburg.
A viewer alerted us to the problem, and shared how sad they were to see a patriotic emblem in shambles. Larry Kozloski, an Army veteran says he couldn't agree more.
"When I see one that's tattered or even flown at night without a light on it, it's just disrespectful," Kozloski said.
No one knows who the flag belongs to and according to the viewer, he couldn't get many answers. We took those concerns to American Legion post 137 on the Westside. There, the flag is held in highest regard.
"The flag is no different than those that have given the ultimate sacrifice. It's got to be taken care of in a proper manner," Emory Austin said.
According to Commander Austin, there are two ways to handle a flag. If it's been around awhile and has history, it can be retired and placed into a shadow box.
In a case of wear and tear there's a burning ceremony that lasts about 20 minutes and even includes the playing of Taps.
"Those flags have to be presented. They have to be inspected and stated that they are in inservicable condition before we dispose of those flags," Austin said.
Austin says the viewer in Middleburg did the right thing. Someone should take the raggedy flag down and give it the respect it's due.
Kozloski agrees.
"The flag is the symbol of our freedom. A lot of people have died protecting that flag," he said.
If you see a tattered flag, you can go to your local American Legion or VFW, and drop it of. They will be able to properly dispose it there.
