JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A pedestrian is dead after being struck by a JTA bus in Downtown Jacksonville on Saturday night.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said it happened at the corner of Beaver Street and Newnan Street around 8:45 p.m.

The pedestrian, who was in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was described as being "shaken up" and was taken to a local hospital.

The street light in the area where the man was struck is out. Action News asked detectives if the dark corner played a role in the bus driver not being able to see the pedestrian.  JSO said they can not confirm the light played a factor.

Detectives say the JTA bus driver was heading Northbound on Beaver Street and was making a left turn when it hit the pedestrian, running over his body.

It is unclear which direction the pedestrian was walking. JSO is still working to determine who had the right of way.

"Between the vehicles and pedestrians everybody has to obey the law.  That's what prevents accidents.  It's real early in the investigation to determine for sure who may have contributed," said Detective JD Gregory, JSO.

Det. Gregory said it does not appear that speed played a role in the crash. The Rosa Parks bus station was just down the street from where the accident happened.

The identities of the driver and the pedestrian have not yet been released.
