PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. -- A detour re-routed drivers in San Mateo after a pedestrian was hit and killed at the intersection of US-17 and Horse Landing Road Thursday.
Kaycee Gaulden lives close to the scene and experienced delays while driving because of the incident. “I didn't think anyone got hit. I thought it was a car accident. That's what I really thought at first, but now I found out it's not. It's actually someone that got hit and killed,” Gaulden said.
Action News saw officials with Florida Highway Patrol measuring on the road as they tried to figure out exactly what happened. “Two pedestrians were attempting to cross 17 out here. There was an SUV coming. One pedestrian stopped but the other pedestrian continued on. There was a vehicle and pedestrian collision at that time,” said Sgt. Dennis Smith with FHP.
Just before they left the scene, FHP told Action News what they think led to the crash. “The investigation continues. At this time we can more than likely say it was alcohol related,” Smith said.
Florida Highway Patrol says they have more work to do to see if the driver will face any charges.
