JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A police officer opened fire on a man who tried to grab another officer's gun.

The shooting happened Monday night near the corner of Pearl and 12th streets in Jacksonville's Springfield area.

Police say officers responded to the home on a domestic battery call.

Investigators went to arrest a man who told officers that he just got out of jail and wasn't going back, and "officers would have to kill him first," according to JSO Undersheriff Dwain Senterfitt.

As officers moved in, police say the man tried to grab the gun of an officer behind him. A second officer opened fire, killing the suspect.

Officer Kevin Kilcoin was taken to UF & Shands Hospital in Jacksonville with minor injuries. JSO isn't sure if he got injured in the fall, or was hit by gunfire or ricochet.

Officer Scott Williams is the officer who fired on the suspect. He will be put on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in police shootings.

The suspect has not been identified.

JSO will hold a news conference Tuesday at 11 a.m. to release more information.
