GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Police say Mason Beuning, 18, constructed a homemade bomb inside his Gainesville home.

A bomb squad responded to Buening's home Tuesday afternoon after the teen was arrested for allegedly shoplifting BBs and flare guns at a nearby Walmart along with items investigators believe could be used to make an explosive device.

Police tell Action News that Buening admitted during questioning that he already had a "homemade firework" at his house, but was afraid to detonate it.

Investigators recovered a cardboard tube sealed with black powder and a fuse inside the house on NW 4th Street.

Gainesville Police Officer Ben Tobias said, "It was a small device.  Definitely would have injured someone who was right next to it, but the device was not something that would cause a great amount of destruction."

Buening's college-aged housemates told Action News Tuesday night that they knew about the explosive and contend that Beuning who is studying to be an EMT just built the device to explode it in the woods for fun.

Leela Dawson, one of several young adults who live in the house with Beuning said, "That's what guys do. Blow things up"

Beuning is charged with "possession of a destructive device," a third degree felony.

Wolfe O'Meara, 18, was arrested along with Beuning at the Walmart. O'Meara is charged with misdemeanor shoplifting and possession of drug paraphernalia.

It sounds like he made a M-80 or M-250 which he use to be able to buy at firework stores. I know back when I was a kid it was not uncommon for us boys to make our own.His was made out of cardboard not metal. And times have changed and people are scared but thanks god that charges like this did not exist when I was a boy because a lot of us would be been so much trouble just from being a kid doing stupid things for fun.

Blame the parents and the people he hangs out with, it all begins at home.Beat this kids azz and lock him up for a long time, he looks like a troubled kid. Parents need to spend time with their kids, love them and teach them right from wrong and quit worrying about the almighty dollar and keeping up with the jones!

These young people today are amazing. They need attention so badly that they will go to any extreme, even playing with things they know nothing about, just ot get it. What is really bad is that they need attention so badly that they don't care if it is positive or negative attention as long as they are the center of attention.

Use as a fire work? Yea right! fire works have no need of BB's let alone be fashioned into a "pipe bomb" good thing he was not able to detinate it. Regardless of his fear of his own devise, have a nice ruined life idiot!
