JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The government has just 14 days left to prepare for the opening of the healthcare insurance marketplace on October 1.

“There are still many questions that need to be answered over the next two weeks,” said Dr. Daniel Kantor, vice president of the Duval County Medical Society.

On Tuesday, Kantor and nearly 50 other local healthcare industry experts met with regional organizers to try and get those questions.

“The problem is going to be with implementation,” said Kantor.

Even though the government’s information website, Healthcare.gov, has been active since June, Kantor said local patients and doctors alike are still confused by the options.

“You have a bronze plan. You have a silver, gold, platinum plan. People are not going to know which is the right plan for them and then people are going to be able to switch plans.”

Mark Colwell is Director of Consumer Marketing for Go Health Insurance, an agency contracted by the government to help walk consumers through the process. He says his team is ready, but he admits it’s an evolving process that can only be perfected over time.

“I think what will be a bigger piece of the puzzle is when consumers and doctors really look at the plan and see what is going to be covered.”

Those details won’t be available for another two weeks, however, and Kantor says it’s too early to know what the impact of this legislation will truly be.

“I think this is a big job and I think that the government may have bitten off more than it could chew. But we'll see if it's going to be possible to really get people signed up.”

The healthcare marketplace opens Oct. 1. Coverage will begin as soon as January 1.
