GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Tim Tebow, who is now with the New England Patriots, tried to intervene in a bar fight involving former Patriots TE Aaron Hernandez while the two were Florida Gators.

The incident happened on April 28, 2007. Hernandez was 17 years old at the time. He was listed as a freshman tight end out of Bristol Central High School, at 6'2" and weighing 256 pounds. Tebow was in his sophomore year with the Gators.

A report from the Gainesville Police Department listed Tebow as a witness in an altercation at The Swamp, a popular hangout near campus for football fans.

The victim, Michael Anthony Taphorn, told police he and the defendant, identified as Aaron Josef Hernandez, got into a verbal altercation over a bar tab that had not been paid.

Hernandez, according to the report, asked Tebow over to intervene. The two sides were unable to resolve the matter and Hernandez was escorted out of the bar.

Taphorn told police Hernandez hit him in the head outside the bar. Hernandez, according to the report, left the scene before police arrived.

Taphorn said he complained of hearing loss in his right ear. He went to the doctor the next day and learned that his eardrum had burst and needed 4-6 weeks to heal.

A formal complaint for a felony battery charge was filed against Hernandez on May 9, 2007.

Six years later, Hernandez is in jail facing first-degree murder charges in the death of 27-year-old Odin Lloyd.  Reports also indicate he is under investigation for a double murder in Boston last year.
