Jacksonville, FLA. - Pablo's Mexican Restaurant Grill & Cantina is located on North Second Street in Fernandina Beach.
This week the state health inspector found 28 violations at the restaurant. Six of the violations were high priority meaning they could make you sick.

Here are some of the problems we found documented in the state report:

Raw fish held at the wrong temperature - Ice was immediately placed on it to cool it down.
Equipment and utensils were not properly sanitized
Small flying insects were found in the food prep area

Owner Fernando Madrigal says, "I am fixing all the problems. I've been in business for six years and unfortunately we had those problems this week. I want to do all I can to make sure our customers come and eat and don't get food poisoning and that everything is right. The most important thing to me is the customer - they are my priority. The pest control people will be here tomorrow."

Fat Jack's BBQ Baker County in Macclenny and The Sheik on Phillips highway in Jacksonville rounded out the top of the list for the restaurants with the most number of critical violations.

Congratulations to the following restaurants for having ZERO health violations. They get our clean plate award of the week!

Da Munchies - Jacksonville
Mr. P's Concession - Jacksonville
The Conch Shell - Jacksonville
Peter Sausages & Hot Dogs - Jacksonville
French Fry Heaven - Jacksonville

My family frequently eats at Pablos and it is fabulous and authentic... run by wonderful, fastidious, honest, hard working people who really care about their customers. Before you get too excited and concerned about this report, know that it isn't such a big deal to get a few (or even dozens of) violations. I know because I worked for a division of the health department in a different state. What matters is frequent violations that are not corrected. That is NOT the case at Pablos! I feel certain that if the health inspector came into any average household kitchen they would find way more so called critical violations! Look around... do you have a family pet that walks through the kitchen? Did the kids leave the door open and let a couple of flies buzz in? Did you stir the green beans with the same spoon you used in a sauce? Is there any grease on your stove's filter vent? Did you pick up a bit of food to taste with your fingers? Are there any spills in your fridge? Do you use gloves in all your food preparation? If you can answer yes to any of these, then that is a violation. Pablos is really a great restaurant...totally undeserving of such negative, sensational publicity intended to grab your attention and make you tune in to the 11 o'clock news. If the reporter really wanted to provide a service and a more valuable report, perhaps the story could focus on frequent repeated violations where no attempt is made to correct! That would be REAL NEWS and quite helpful.

I am a regular customer at Pablo's and let me tell you that I have never gotten sick from any food I have eaten there and I do have a sensitive stomach. I have gotten sick a other local restaurants in the area but never from Pablo's. Fernando and Pablo are very great and genuine folks who do their best in serving the best to their customers. Gnats are found everywhere in Florida and seriously you cant get rid of them, not even in a restaurant. The violations this restaurant has made were minor and are being made out to be horrible. Every single restaurant you will eat at will contain errors in any way, sanitation will not be 100 percent pleasing either because if you think about strangers are cooking your food with utensils that have been used over and over again! I need you to think about it before you go in and judge the place. The place is always packed, and is one of the best places downtown Fernandina. Amazing quality food, awesome service, and a beautiful atmosphere, what more can you ask for? Sure errors are made but that's life in general anyways right? I for one will keep going there very weekend for an awesome authentic dish and a flavorful margarita. To hell with the violations!
