JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- After 35 years protecting Jacksonville in uniform, Sgt. Mark Shinholser said his retirement wasn't going to stop him from continuing to do, when he witnessed gunfire at a Blanding Boulevard post office Sunday.
"It's in your system, you can't get it out," he said.
Shinholser said he didn't think twice when he saw 22-year-old Arianne Myles fire shots at her ex-boyfriend Harold Davis.
"My first thought process when you got a felony taking place is to intervene," he said.
Worried Myles would get away, he followed her with his wife in the passenger seat. The couple recorded Myles' tag number, then called JSO, who pursued her until she crashed into another vehicle.
Shinholser said Myles was so resistent to arrest, he had to step in.
"I helped to get her in handcuffs because she was fighting them," he said.
Shinholser says he may get all the credit for tracking down Myles, but he says he couldn't have done it without his other half.
"She's been my partner in life for almost 42 years, she was like my riding partner," he said.
