JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A shootout in broad daylight behind a busy shopping center on the city's Northside sent one man to the hospital.

Police tell Action News the search is on for two groups of shooters.

It happened Tuesday off Washington Avenue in the back parking lot of Eveready Restaurant and Lounge.

Cops have been going door to door to area businesses to see if their surveillance video recorded the shootout.

Evidence markers line the back lot of the business. Bullet-riddled cars are being investigated by cops. It's evident at least 30 shots were fired at the scene.

Police aren't yet sure if the man taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries was struck by a bullet or if he sustained his injuries before the gunbattle started.

"We have one group of people that were disputing with another group of people," said JSO Sgt. Bobby Lyle. "When that dispute escalated into a physical fight and hands and fists and then escalated further with gunfire."

The As We Grow Preschool and Learning Center is just yards from where police say bullets were flying.

"The school was on lockdown so I just waited and waited and waited until I asked one of the officers 'can I go in and pick up my grandchildren'," said one grandmother who did not want to reveal her identity.

She was frantic, rushing to pick up her two grandsons. She says they were out back playing when it happened.

"My grandson said he was at recess doing jumping jacks and they just heard shots so they got all the kids into the school," the grandmother said.

Action News is told all of the suspects fled. Police have tracked down one vehicle thought to be involved, but no arrests have been made.

"We do have a possible suspect vehicle that we have detained at another location in the same central area. I have detectives at that scene as well that are trying to decipher whether that's involved in this incident or not," Lyle said.

Many of the people passing by tell Action News that gun crime is nothing new for the restaurant -- despite a sign painted on the front of the building, reading "No guns. No knifes. No drugs."

Police are asking anyone with information to give them a call.
