JACKSONVILLE, FL. -- Many Wal-Mart employees plan to walk out on the biggest shopping day of the year.

Terry Buckenmeyer is a member of St. Augustine's Industrial Workers of the World. The protest organizer says the idea is to hit Wal-Mart where it hurts on the biggest shopping day of the year by asking workers to walk out.

Protests are planned across the country to send Wal-Mart a message that workers need better pay and benefits.

"We are doing a picket to show solidarity  with the organization United for Respect of Wal-Mart," said Buckenmeyer. "It's to show people that there are members of the community who support them in their legal right to organize for better conditions, pay, respect."

Most Wal-Marts are already open 24 hours, so employees were going to have to be here on Thanksgiving anyways, as in years past.

Wal-Mart's not the only big box store facing criticism. For the second year in a row, employees of Target and Toys R Us are signing online petitions at Change.org calling for Thanksgiving Day off. The Target petition had collect more than 300,000 online signatures as of Saturday night.

Toys R Us led the pack last year opening at 9 p.m. This year they'll open at 8 p.m. Target is opening at 9 p.m.

"To me, Christmas has never been about things. It's been about the whole peace on Earth and everybody love everybody and when you see what happens at some of these stores on Black Friday, it's like the total opposite."

Last year's calls for retailers to change their hours were unsuccessful.

Target stated on its Web site about the decision to open at 9 p.m. was a result of feedback heard from guests and cited a "highly competitive" holiday season.

Maybe people should ask all the Hostess employees how happy they are to now have Thanksgiving off. Twinkies will come back made by someone else but their jobs never will. Without the Black Friday sales, many stores would not survive, and some still might not. Nobody is forcing people to work for these stores. They work there because they need a job and that is all they could find or want. There are many people waiting to replace them, including now over 18,000 Hostess workers who gambled on a union's advice and lost. A lot of people would be happy to work any day so they can put many meals on the table, even if it means missing part of one to do it. A lot of restaurant, grocery, healthcare, public safety, and many other types of workers do. Let's not forget the football players, refs, stadium workers, broadcast workers, and others who entertain us from our La-Z-Boys. Where would we get our turkeys, chairs, and other products without stores? Even the Amish shop at Walmart nowadays.

I hope they lost their jobs! Unions are NOT for employees they are for union bosses and the politicians the union bosses want... If a company doesn't want a union they shouldn't have to have one and if you want to work and give up a portion of your paycheck to a union then move to a state that can't get out from under the union and try to survive there....UNIONS need to be abolished look what they put in our White House and he HATES the USA and Americans in general.

All these stores mentioned here think about money, money, money. What about the families that come together on Thanksgiving? They are taking away from that time especially their families and children. Why not start at 5 or 6 in the morning? That is the better way. Keep protesting and maybe one day they will listen. I know several people who will not be shopping at these stores on Thanksgiving day. Instead they will be devoting time with their loved ones.
