PALATKA, Fla. -- A Florida Highway Patrol trooper is hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the face, and one suspect is dead and another at large following a shootout in Palatka.
Investigators say trooper Lawrence Andrew Litzell pulled over a Mercury Grand Marquis on Reid Street early Saturday morning.
Authorities say two men jumped out of the car and ran.
One man turned and fired at Litzell, hitting him in the face.
The trooper shot back, killing one suspect. He's been identified as 24-year-old Somourian Jamal Wingo.
The second man who ran from the car escaped.
Litzell was taken by medical helicopter to UF Health in Gainsesville, where he is in stable condition.
Authorities recovered a .25 caliber semiautomatic handgun at the scene.
Action News searched records from the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office that show Wingo had four arrests since 2008, mostly for marijuana possession and violation of probation. He was arrested twice in five days in May 2010 for selling cocaine and marijuana possession.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is handling the investigation.
