Men rescued after sailboat runs aground in Ponte Vedra Beach
SOUTH PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- Two men who crashed ashore in a sailboat after being adrift for seven days have been treated and released from the hospital.
They were sailing from Port St. Lucie to the Bahamas when their sailboat lost power. Their boat ultimately ran aground shortly before midnight near the 3000 block of South Ponte Vedra Boulevard.
The incident occurred right across the street from St. Johns County Fire & Rescue, who treated the men on the scene.
The boaters were identified as 86-year-old Francis Saunders of Port St. Lucie and 71-year-old Jerry Willis of Cocoa.
Both men were taken to Flagler Hospital to be evaluated for minor injuries and exposure.
A witness said the men had a dog with them. It was reportedly taken to the St. Johns County Animal Control.
The sailboat drifted to 3141 South Ponte Vedra Blvd.
Florida Fish and Wildlife, who is investigating the case, are checking to see if the men picked the dog up today. They are also needing our help locating the men. If anybody knows where to find Saunders and Willis, have them contact FWC at 888-404-3922.
