Columbia Correctional Institution Captain dismissed

COLUMBIA COUNTY, Fla. — The captain of the Columbia Correctional Institution has been dismissed.

The Department of Corrections said Capt. Jason Fox failed to properly report information he received from outside law enforcement regarding potential criminal activity at the prison.

"The Department of Corrections has zero tolerance for anything less than absolute competence from our officers and staff.  Anything less compromises our primary mission of public safety and will not be allowed," said Corrections Secretary Michael D. Crews.

The prison has seen its share of incidents in the past several years.

Earlier this month, the prison said an inmate died in a fight with another inmate.  The incident remains under investigation.

Last month, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement charged seven people in a shooting scheme to defraud the prison system.  That stemmed from a shooting in March that led to a lockdown.

In 2012, an inmate fatally stabbed Sgt. Ruben Thomas at the prison.
