Infants should sleep in same room as parents, report says

Infants should sleep in the same room as their parents for the first year, according to a report from the American Academy of Pediatrics.

The report says that room sharing can decrease the risk of sudden infant death syndrome, or SIDS, by nearly 50 percent.

The doctors do not recommend that babies sleep in the same bed with their parents.

The report also acknowledges that tired parents can fall asleep while feeding babies, so the doctors recommend making the adult bed safer for an infant by removing all pillows, sheets and blankets and having a firm mattress.

Doctors say feeding in bed is safer than a couch or armchair, where loose pillows can be dangerous if the adult falls asleep while feeding a baby.
