The Baker County Sheriff's Office is investigating after a 12-year-old boy shot himself in the hand at a home in Macclenny Friday.

Deputies responded to a home on Quail Lane and were told that the boy shot himself in the left hand with a 9 mm handgun, BCSO said in a news release.

According to the release, "the Juvenile resided at the residence with his mother, (4)siblings, and (1) nephew. Ages 6 mo, 10, 17, 23, and 25."

It was determined that the gun, which was placed in the bottom of a dresser drawer under some clothing by the boy's 23-year-old sibling, belonged to a family friend.

The gun's owner left it at the home after plans to go to a shooting range in Lake City fell through and he planned to come back for the gun at a later time.

Deputies said the gun has not been reported stolen and no one in the home nor the owner of the gun have felony convictions.

The boy was taken to UF Health Jacksonville to be treated. All parties are cooperating with the investigation, BCSO said.
