2 Duval County students killed overnight in Yulee

Two teenage boys from Jacksonville were killed Wednesday night in a crash in Yulee.

The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash and believe weather was a factor.

A blue Nissan Sentra driven by a 16-year-old was headed south, went off the road and overcorrected when a car headed north T-boned the Sentra. The driver, Kay Deraway IV, 16, of Jacksonville, and passenger Travis Lighthall, 15, of Jacksonville, died at the scene.

The 76-year-old driver in the other car was taken to UF Health Jacksonville and is expected to be OK.

Kay and Travis were cousins. They were headed to church at the time of the crash.

“You couldn’t separate them. If one did something, they were doing it too,” said Brendan Wishart, cousin.

Thursday afternoon, several people stopped at the crash site.

“It’s hard to believe they’re gone, it really is,” says Megan Stevens.

“Feels like a dream, you can’t wake up from,” says Wishart.

Much of the highway is dark, and on Wednesday night it was wet; both wet roads and dark conditions were likely a factor in the crash.

"It can be dangerous at times, especially when you start incorporating inclement weather, some possible driver distractions or anything of that nature," says Sgt. Dylan Bryan with FHP

Action News Jax checked to see how dangerous the highway is. According to FHP, in the last year, from Pecan Park Road north across the county line into Nassau, there were 32 crashes and no fatalities. At the Nassau/Duval county lines to the Georgia border, there were 110 crashes, and three fatalities.

Grief counselors were at both boys' schools on Thursday, First Coast High School and Oceanway Middle School.

Duval County Schools released a statement:

"The communities of First Coast High School, Oceanway Middle School, and Duval County Public Schools are deeply saddened by the unexpected passing of two of its students due to an auto accident. To support the well-being of students and faculty, specially-trained school counselors and social workers will be onsite today at both schools, and will provide continued support as needed."
